How does that make you feel?

The husband of Argentinian President Cristina Fernández, former Argentinian President Néstor Kirchner, passed away yesterday. My President, Juan Manual Santos, was interviewed over this international event. The first question: What do you think of the death of former President Kirchner? SERIOUSLY!?! What the heck is he supposed to answer? "I think it's awesome that he's dead, he was quite frankly more handsome than I am."

Chilean President Sebastián Piñeres also commented: "I see Cristina very strong, but very moved." Again--SERIOUSLY!?! Her husband just died at age 60, suddenly, without any apparent signal (because Death always warns us, you know...), and you see her moved?

Come on, people. Better questions. Better answers.

  1. Haha, to be fair, the questions are a bit perfunctory. When there's a huge international event they need to ask the stupid question to get a quote or a blurb they can use.

Of course, there's always the slight hope the person will royally fuck up the answer and give them something juicier. Reporters aren't as dumb as they look (and some look pretty fucking dumb).

Hemingway, I apologize for the general absence of wit in my comment but I have to go see a man about a makeshift steadicam.

Also, First Comment Ever....on your blog :)

    Gratz for starting it!

Find someone who makes you laugh

When I was 16, I had a boyfriend. One of my mom's friends, very close to the family and for whom I cared very much, once asked me (in front of my mom) if said boyfriend made me laugh. In trying to be bold and mature and, well, in trying to surprise and scare my mom, I said, "Well, yeah, kinda. But most importantly, he is awesome in bed!" I was lying, in case anyone is freaking out. My mom was (and probably is again now) freaking out. Her friend simply said, "Whatever, that is not important. What is important is that he makes you laugh. That is the most important thing: to be with someone who makes you laugh." This is perhaps the best piece of advice I have ever been given. Be with someone who makes you laugh . Because, the thing is, this not only refers to sex partners. This is true for life, and for everyone in your life. In my life. In counting my friends, I realize we laugh a lot together. Bear in mind that most my friends are English majors, like me; so ou...

Penny for your thoughts...

I don't particularly care for unsolicited advice - I think no one does. I do appreciate people who care enough about me to give me such unsolicited advice anyway, but they do it in such a polite manner that I feel as if I asked them to advise me. Like my friend H, who sent me an email regarding my name , or my friend J who sends me pics of what dress I should wear. I like that. I like that because they are both just saying what they think while fully respecting whatever I choose. My friend J also happens to have the same taste in dresses as I do, so her advice is much more like SOLICITED help. But then come the people who express their opinions in ways that make you want to kill them. Seriously. I am no murderer, but sometimes I can see why murders happen. Phrases that begin with, "It is so stupid to [insert MY personal opinion about the subject at hand]" seriously bring out the worst in me. Dude, I think, if you want to persuade me to think like you and to agree with...

Deutschland for Idiots (or, Letter to Angela Merkel)

Dear Angie , You're awesome. And your country is awesome too. I am so grateful that you, personally, took the time to evaluate my visa application and decided to approve my request. I think it's super that you have this tremendous girl-power and that you single-handedly manage to run this amazing country. A country so rich that can close every single store  on Sundays, and throw clients out of stores when the clock indicates closing time. I don't say this in a pejorative way, not at all. I am actually quite impressed that your economy is so  strong that you really can manage to close every single commercial establishment for one day, every week. That is, 52 days a year; that is, almost two months. In my country, we not only open every day, but we stay open until late and when the clock strikes closing time, we prefer to lock customers in until they buy something--never kick them out. Maybe (in retrospective, and from an outside perspective) your country is so rich because...
